Rosetta's Wiki PageUnfortunately, Rosetta's wiki article is poorly fleshed out, so I've done my best to succinctly describe her history as given in the game.
Rosetta, despite looking and acting like a human, is actually a primal beast created by the Astrals many many centuries ago. Given the name Rose Queen, her sole purpose was to defend her island from attack by skyfarers looking to wage war against the Astrals and their territory. But the Astrals were defeated and Rosetta's island torched and destroyed, and Rosetta herself was sent plummeting downwards through the sky until she landed on one of the islands in the Lumacie Archipelago.
There, she's found by another primal beast by the name of Yggdrasil, who helps her heal and keeps her company over the course of the next few centuries. During that time, Rosetta reflects on her past and the beliefs she had once held without question. She had been taught as a primal beast to hate skyfarers, to view them as a pathetic race, powerless and incapable of accomplishing any great feat. And yet, they'd proven themselves strong in their own right, courageous and brave and
free in a way that's enough to pique Rosetta's curiosity.
It's that curiosity that moves her to accept an invitation from a mysterious skyfarer (later revealed to be the Main Character's father), who shows up on the island one day and soundly trounces her in battle. Despite Rosetta's actions towards the skydwellers all those centuries ago, he doesn't seem to mind and encourages her to join him and travel the skies with his crew. Many years later, she meets up with the Main Character and joins their crew as well, though she keeps a tight lid on her adventures and past.
Personality: Rosetta, like her namesake flower, is a lovely and charming woman in both appearance and personality. She acts every part of a lady, mature and confident and oftentimes flirtatious, and certainly behaves as a lady might when her appearance or age are insulted or jokingly ribbed at, with both her smile and words turning as sharp as thorns. This leads to her being a bit of a hypocrite, as she has no qualms when it comes to pushing the boundaries of comfort of those around her. If there's an action that'll lead to a charming blush or a flustered stammer, she'll gladly that that route even if it results in consternation and irritation from the other party. To her credit, she does choose to focus on aspects that are complimentary rather than insulting, and when feathers do end up ruffled she's quick to soothe.
Despite having a number of weapons, physical and magical, at her disposal, Rosetta prefers relying on her charm to sway things in her favor. There's always an easy smile dancing on her lips for friends and foes alike, and she's alarmingly adept at redirecting the tide of conversation the way she wants it to go. Though she eschews lies in favor of the truth, her truths are often veiled and phrased in cryptic riddles, just thought-provoking enough that those who hear them give up trying to mine for the real words beneath. It's a skill she uses often, particularly when someone gets a little too nosy about her and her goals. Despite her willingness to cozy up to people, Rosetta is highly secretive about her own history.
The reason for this is that Rosetta is absolutely not what she appears to be. Instead of the human woman her fellow skyfarers see, she's actually a primal beast originally created with the express intention of fighting and destroying the same skyfarers she now travels the skies with. For hundreds of years she was used as a tool and taught to hate skyfarers and to see them as nothing more than pests to be exterminated. Not exactly a history that would endear her to those she meets. She's certainly moved past that viewpoint to embrace the best that skyfarers have to offer, finding herself especially interested in those people who display those same qualities of bravery and dedication to their ideals that she saw in the skyfarers that she fought all those years ago. Still, her time as a weapon has left its mark on her; despite her easy-going nature, there's a loneliness in her that stems from centuries of solitude, one that she's only starting to overcome on the Grandcypher, the ship she travels on with the Main Character and their crew.
As a result, her friends are some of the nearest and dearest treasures that she holds close to her heart and there is very little Rosetta won't do to keep them safe and happy. On an ordinary day, she serves as moral and emotional support, and as a role model for the younger female members of the crew. Sometimes this comes at the cost of her own emotional vulnerability; she rarely shows any sign of her own concerns, preferring to deal with her problems alone rather than burden her friends with them. In a way, she almost cares more about those around her than herself. She prefers talking people up and highlighting their best features rather than engaging in a more 'tough love' type of approach. Even if her crewmates don't always know or understand the depth of her experience, her unshakable assurance does wonders in pushing them forward and helping keep spirits up. And when things get tough and those she loves find themselves in danger, she's quick to drop her easygoing act and put all hands on deck, sparing no mercy for anyone that might be foolish enough to threaten her friends.
Abilities & Skills: ▶ As Rosetta: In her human appearance, Rosetta boasts the use of elemental wind and earth magic (the latter in the form of defensive thorny vines), as well as increased damage resistance and a small amount of self-healing magic. She also carries a dagger that she is proficient with should she ever need to resort to physical attacks. However, she is largely hindered by the physical limitations of her human body in terms of combat.
▶ As Rose Queen: Rosetta's magical power is amplified greatly when she is in her primal beast form. However, in order to use her powers as Rose Queen, Rosetta
must be connected and bound to a degree to the land she currently occupies, at which point she can take control of the native flora and summon forth thorny vines to do her bidding. The longer she stays connected to a land the more intertwined with it she becomes, until it is impossible to separate the two.
Inventory/Companions:▶ Her dagger
▶ A swimsuit picked out for her by Io and Lyria
Choice: Witch
Reason: I like the idea of challenging her to have to rebuild herself and her powers from the ground up. Having essentially been 'born' (or more accurately, created) completely whole and with a large powerset, it'll be a new experience for her to have to start from scratch like everyone else. No doubt it'll frustrate her at some points, but that's what growth is.
